Biocat and EIT Health promoted the first edition of Ignite·Health Barcelona, a new entrepreneurship in health program for healthcare professionals, researchers and students interested in starting out in the world of innovation and entrepreneurship.

There were 86 applicants for this first edition and 23 participants selected from several countries, including Portugal, Italy and the United States, who took their first steps towards becoming successful entrepreneurs in the sector.

Over the four months of training, the students set up multidisciplinary teams and identified real needs in the fields of cardiology, pulmonology and COVID-19 in Intensive Care Units (ICU), which they then developed into a viable business idea.

In total, there were 13 projects on catching heart attacks early in high-risk patients, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), planning surgeries to prevent blood clots, clinical deterioration of hospitalized pediatric patients with congenital conditions and the complications of bone grafts.

This training was complemented with masterclasses on entrepreneurship, product development, market access, product pitches and sessions by entrepreneurs who shared their personal experience (small talks).
